New Rules on EU Political Parties

New rules on European political parties, adopted during the Parliament’s final plenary session, aim to increase their visibility, recognition and accountability by establishing a European legal regime that will be valid in all Member States. The rules will also make it easier for European parties to generate their own resources, by raising the annual limit on donations from EUR 12,000 to 18,000 per donor per year. Donation above EUR 3,000 per year will have to be reported. In return, parties will have to meet high standards on internal governance, accountability, transparency and respect for the values of the EU.

Most European political parties are currently registered in Belgium as non-profit organisations. The new rules, considered by Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič as a “step towards consolidating European democracy”, were approved after 18 months of intense negotiations. They must still be formally endorsed by the Council and should enter into force on 1 January 2017.
