The ETUI is organizing an expert workshop “Living Wages in Europe”, in cooperation with the Institute for Economic and Social Research (WSI) of the Hans Böckler Foundation in Germany. The aim of the workshop is to bring together experts on the issue of minimum and living wages in order to discuss the possibilities of promoting the concept of the living wage across Europe as one way to address the ever-increasing problem of in-work poverty and as a means to ensure a decent standard of living for workers. As you can see from the draft programme, the first day of the workshop will start with a discussion of conceptual issues and a session on the UK living wage as the most advanced example of a living wage movement in Europe. We will then continue on the second day with a concrete company example. The workshop will conclude with a panel discussing whether it is time for a European approach to living wages.
